Displays and Exhibits
Missouri City Branch Library has two permanent displays in the building.

THE BELIK KINETIC SCULPTURE is a unique element of the Missouri City Branch Library. The large kinetic sculpture created by artist Jaroslav Belik is installed in the vaulted entry of the building. The primary element of the sculpture is a large, red, rotating square, to which are attached a yellow and a blue square, which do not rotate but move in relation to the larger red square. The sculpture moves slowly, so it may be seen as an art piece in a momentary position, or it may be observed through its entire cycle of motion, with the myriad compositions that are formed.

THE SHERMAN SCULPTURES-- a set of six bronze sculptures, were presented to the Missouri City Branch Library BY Missouri City Sculptor Tony Sherman. The title of the permanent display is "Yearning For a Rebirth (The Annihilation of a Culture)." The sculptures include five well-known Native American leaders (Satanta, Kiowa tribe; Red Cloud, Oglala Sioux tribe; Geronimo, Chiricahua Apache tribe; Sitting Bull, Hunkpapa Sioux tribe; and Satank, Kiowa tribe), and the United States general who brought his concept ot "total war" to the Indians, General William T. Sherman.

Most of the branches also feature changing displays and exhibits in their display cases. Check the calendar for the current displays.

HISTORY OF MISSOURI CITY BRANCH LIBRARY
Missouri City Branch Library opened in June 1992, the first of the four new branches built with funds voted for in the 1989 bond election. Missouri City residents were very instrumental in the success of that bond election, and the land for the new library site was donated by Missouri City. The 18,642-square-foot building was designed by Hall/Merriman Architects, Bill Merriman, Design Architect.

THE FRIENDS OF THE MISSOURI CITY BRANCH LIBRARY

The Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library was organized to support the branch with extra funds for things not provided for in the county budget. Many of the original members had worked hard for the 1989 bond election that resulted in the building of four new branch libraries throughout the county, beginning with Missouri City. The group has an ongoing book sale in the branch, and over the years, the organization has purchased several computers for the branch, provided funds for several reference sets and for books in general, provided funds for a slatwall display unit, and provided funds for the Summer Reading Club trophies. The organization has also regularly provided funds to both children's and adult programming. For more information about the Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library, or to join the organization, call the the library at 281-499-4100.
