Cinco Ranch Branch and George Memorial Libraries Celebrate Earth Month in April

In recognition of Earth Month in April, Fort Bend County Libraries will have two programs about environmental awareness. Learn about ways to help the planet by reducing waste, and discover how to save money as well! The programs are free and open to the public.

  • Cinco Ranch Branch Library -- Tuesday, April 2, 7:00 to 8:00 pm, in the Multi-purpose Room. “Reducing Your Plastic Footprint

    Debby Wendt, program coordinator for the Coastal Prairie Chapter of the Texas Master Naturalists, will talk about the impact of plastics on the environment and ways to reduce or eliminate the amount of plastics that are used. Hear about alternatives to disposable, one-use items such as plastic baggies and straws. Wendt will also talk about the harmful effects of balloon releases and will offer suggestions for other activities that can be just as meaningful.
     
  • George Memorial Library, Richmond -- Saturday, April 13, 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. “Earth Day Festival

    Numerous family activities recognizing the importance of protecting the environment are planned throughout the library for the duration of the festival. Children are invited to stop by the Youth Services department for an “Earth Daisy” craft activity.

    Electric and hybrid vehicles from different automobile manufacturers will be on display in the south parking lot. Test rides of the Tesla vehicles will be available on a limited basis. Tesla will also have a display of solar panels in the lobby of the library.

    Whitney Milberger-Laird, from the North Fort Bend Water Authority, will have the service’s Mobile Teaching Lab on site. This traveling exhibit trailer includes interactive displays showing water usage in everyday activities and the importance of water conservation.

    Jena Peevy, from the Metropolitan Transit Authority, will be available in Room 2A to answer questions about the METRO STAR vanpool and to share information about their commuter services.  Learn how the program works and how participation in the program benefits the environment as well as the participant.

    The Earth Day Festival will also include two workshops where visitors can learn about recycling and making more efficient use of the earth’s natural resources.

    Beginning at 11:00 am, a “Solar Cooking 101” workshop will take place in the Meeting Room of the library. Learn how to make a solar-powered oven with a cardboard box, aluminum foil, and glass.

    At 1:00 pm, a “Recycling 101” workshop will begin in the Meeting Room. Learn about recycling resources in the area, as well as how different items should be disposed. Discover ways to upcycle old materials into new and creative items.
