Explore the Great Outdoors… Library Style!

August 2022

When it’s 100+ degrees outside – with no end in sight – it might be hard to contemplate spending time in the great outdoors. Never fear… the library is here!

Head on out to one of our air-conditioned libraries and enjoy a book, a magazine, a newspaper, or some of the great programs we have going on! We actually have two programs in August about the great outdoors – so it’s almost like being there, right?!

If you’re dreaming about some of the places you’d like to go to… when it cools off… we have books and DVDs about fascinating travel destinations around the world. Check out some of these for ideas!

In the meantime, chat with new friends at a book club meeting, learn a new skill at a computer class, or pick up a new hobby at one of our craft programs! We’ll provide the air-conditioning!

Have you ever wanted to break away from the hustle and bustle of the rat race – away from computers and the digital world -- but didn’t know how or where to begin? Find out how to escape to the great outdoors at this program!

Hear about Texas state parks and learn how to use the online reservation system. Library staff will talk about camping equipment and share tips to make camping excursions more enjoyable.

The next meeting of the University Branch Library’s monthly Online Podcast Club will take place on Thursday, August 18, beginning at 6:00 pm. The theme for the month is “The Great Outdoors.” Registration is required (click here); a link to the Webex meeting will be emailed to all who register.

Similar to a book club, the Podcast Club provides an opportunity for podcast listeners to meet online to discuss podcast selections from a themed podcast-listening list and share their opinions on trending topics. Each month features a different theme, along with a short list of podcast episodes.

A direct link to the podcasts can be found here. The playlist of podcasts from which to choose in August includes:

•    “Nature Tourism in Texas” – Under the Texas Sky, 15 m.
•    “Back to the Land; How a Prescription for Nature Could Make Us Healthier” – The Current, 23 m.
•    “America’s Best Idea?” – Out There, 43 m. (listeners can stop listening at 35 minutes in)
•    “How Rewilding Works” – Stuff You Should Know, 46 m.
•    “The Roots of Camping, from S’mores to Shelter to Protest” – Colorado Matters, 28 m.
