FBCL Plans Special Activities for Spring Break

Families with children of all ages are invited to celebrate their Spring Break with special Spring-Fling activities at Fort Bend County Libraries throughout the week of March 9-16. Unwind and have fun at the library during the break from the regular school routine with these free activities.

SATURDAY, MAR 9

Stuffed animals with "Teddy Bear Camp" sign
  • Teddy-Bear Camp” – University Branch Library (all week) (all ages). Children of all ages can bring their second-favorite teddy bear or toy and sign them up for teddy-bear camp between March 9 and 15, but the earlier in the week they come, the more adventures their teddy bear will have! (Campers should be backpack-sized or smaller). Registration opens at 10:00 am on Saturday, March 9, and continues through Friday, March 15, at 4:30 pm. Each day throughout the week, the library’s Youth Services staff will send emails and post photos on the library’s Facebook page showing the stuffed animals and their adventures! After all of their activities at Teddy-Bear Camp are over, the stuffed animals and toys will be ready to return home. On Saturday, March 16, anytime between 2:30 and 3:30 pm, children can pick up their teddy bears, enjoy a snack, and see how much fun everyone had during Teddy-Bear Camp at the Library! Materials for the program are made possible by the Friends of the University Branch Library.
     
  • Infant Sensory PlaytimeFirst Colony Branch Library, 2:00-3:30 pm (infants). Play is one of the primary ways young children learn. Parents or caregivers with children 12 months of age or younger are invited to this special come-and-go program where their children will have an opportunity to learn by exploring with their senses. Materials for this event were made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the First Colony Branch Library.


MONDAY, MAR 11

  • “The Elixir of Love” Children’s OperaBob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, 2:00 pm (grades 2-8). Performed by Houston Grand Opera’s “Opera to Go,” this family-friendly performance, sung in English, is a new adaptation of the popular comic opera. A small-town boy discovers that no potion from a quack doctor could impress his sweetheart more than a hearty dose of self-confidence. A free hand-stamp is required for admission, and will be available one hour prior to the performance. Sponsored by the Friends of the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library.


TUESDAY, MAR 12

  • Make & Take: FlextanglesMission Bend Branch Library, 1:00 pm (all ages). Part coloring activity and part origami, flextangles (aka kaleidocycles) are fun, mesmerizing toys that require geometric thinking and creativity to make!


WEDNESDAY, MAR 13

  • Family Movie DayMission Bend Branch Library, 1:00 pm (all ages). In this animated adventure film, video-game villain Wreck-It-Ralph must brave the Internet via a newly-installed Wi-Fi router in Litwak’s Arcade to help his friend Vanellope retrieve a piece to fix her Sugar Rush game. This movie is rated PG. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
     
  • Yoga for Children” – Sienna Branch Library, 2:00 pm (school-aged children). Ashley Schmidt, a registered yoga instructor, will present a basic introduction and demonstration of this low-impact form of physical exercise and meditation that can be enjoyed by kids just as much as by adults. Children attending the program will learn basic movements and how to stay physically fit with regular exercise. This program is intended for school-aged children. Those attending this program should wear comfortable clothes and sneakers, and should bring a bottle of water and a yoga mat if one is available.

THURSDAY, MAR 14

  • Family Movie DayCinco Ranch Branch Library, 1:30 pm (all ages). This animated action-adventure film ("Zootopia") takes place in a bustling city where various anthropomorphic animals live and thrive in civilized coexistence. When Judy Hopps becomes the first rabbit to join the police force, she learns how tough it can be to enforce the law and keep the peace. Determined to prove herself, Judy joins forces with a charismatic con-artist fox to crack a mysterious case that threatens to damage the delicate balance between the carnivore and herbivore citizens in the city. This movie is rated PG. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.
     
  • Creative Connection – S.T.E.A.M. Game Day: Pi DayUniversity Branch Library, 2:30-3:30 pm (grades 4-8). Students in grades 4 through 8 will play a variety of games and learn something new during the S.T.E.A.M. Session of the Day. Learn how the brain uses memorization using the mathematical concept of “pi” as an example. Materials and snacks are provided through the generous support of the Friends of the University Branch Library.
     
  • After-School Break: Mario GamesMission Bend Branch Library, 4:15 pm (grades K-5). Youth will compete with each other with life-sized Mario games.

 

FRIDAY, MAR 15

  • Family Movie Day -- Sienna Branch Library, 1:30 pm (all ages). Based on Dr. Seuss’ beloved holiday classic, this animated family comedy tells the story of a cynical grump who goes on a mission to steal Christmas, only to have his heart changed by a young girl’s generous holiday spirit. This movie is rated PG. Pillows and blankets are allowed. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

Students in grades 4 through 8 are invited to channel their inner artist and create fantastic abstract art with Goblies Throwable Paintballs! Materials for this event were made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the First Colony Branch Library. Reservations required. SATURDAY, MAR 16

  • Pokémon Party” – Sienna Branch Library, 10:30 am (all ages). Families with children of all ages are invited to enjoy a morning of Pokémon crafts, activities, and games.
     
  • Songs of Peace by Sagit” – Sugar Land Branch Library, 10:30 am (all ages). Sagit Zilberman has performed internationally in South America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Along the way, she picked up regional songs and collected rare and unique instruments from the various locales. Families with children of all ages will enjoy a performance of international folk music performed on instruments from the different regions of the world. This program is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Sugar Land Branch Library.
     
  • Escape from the Hidden Tomb” – Mission Bend Branch Library, 2:00 pm (grades 5-8). Students are challenged to retrieve an ancient artifact and escape a sealed mine containing gemstones, gold, and other lost treasures of Julius Caesar. Solve the clues or puzzles along the way, and overcome the dangers of the mines to make the ultimate escape! Registration required.
