Hispanic Heritage Month Events Celebrate Culture of Latinos

Ballet Folklorico Herencia Mexicana de Houston

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15-October 15, Fort Bend County Libraries will feature several special events celebrating the rich cultural heritage of Latinos in America.

Made possible by the generous support of the Friends of the Library, the events are free and open to the public. For more information, call the branch libraries or the library system’s Communications Office at 281-633-4734.


SEPTEMBER 16 – OCTOBER 31

  • George Memorial Library, Richmond – “Exhibit: Points of View – Hispanic Heritage” – Bohachevsky Gallery. The Art League of Fort Bend will display a selection of artwork in many mediums – from oils and acrylics to photography and fiber arts.


SEPTEMBER 17

  • George Memorial Library, Richmond – “DIY Piñata Workshop” -- 4:00-5:00 pm. Learn about the cultural significance of piñatas in Hispanic celebrations while creating a colorful piñata of one’s own to take home. Registration required; click here to register.


SEPTEMBER 21

  • George Memorial Library, Richmond -- Ballet Folklorico Herencia Mexicana de Houston Performance -- 11:00-11:30 am, Jodie E. Stavinoha Amphitheater. A cultural institution dedicated to preserving and promoting Mexican folkloric dance, Ballet Folklorico Herencia Mexicana de Houston will treat the audience to a colorful, cultural performance that showcases the vestuario (or costumes) and dances from the Avasteca region of Mexico, along with the state of Jalisco. Enjoy traditional Mexican dance and music at this festive event and stay afterwards for pictures and Q&A with the performers!
  • ​ Young Audiences of Houston teaching artist Chef Crys Himes
    University Branch Library, Sugar Land -- “Taste of Mexico” Cooking Demonstration – 1:00-2:00 pm. In this hands-on cooking class, Young Audiences of Houston Teaching Artist Chef Crys will demonstrate how to prepare calabicitas, a refreshing and healthy Mexican side dish featuring fresh garden vegetables and herbs.   • George Memorial Library, Richmond -- “From Idea to 3D: Hispanic Heritage Month Edition” -- 4:00-5:00 pm. Learn about the culture and geography of different Hispanic countries while using 3D modeling software to design and create a unique, personalized pendant for a necklace. OCTOBER 1

  • George Memorial Library, Richmond -- “Papel Picado Crafting” -- 4:00-5:00 pm. Originating in Mexico, papel picado involves the intricate cutting of colorful paper to create decorative banners. Learn about the cultural significance of papel picado in Hispanic celebrations while creating festive creations to take home! Explore traditional patterns and techniques while embracing the beauty and symbolism of this delicate folk art. Registration required; click here to register.

  • George Memorial Library, Richmond -- “Peruvian Friendship Bracelet” Craft -- 4:00-5:00 pm. Discover the significance of these colorful bracelets in the Peruvian culture, while learning traditional knotting techniques and patterns. Registration required; click here to register.
