From Slavery to Freedom – Inspiring Stories of Courageous African-Americans at George Memorial Library

In recognition of African-American History Month in February, Fort Bend County Libraries’ George Memorial Library in Richmond will present a special program, “Inspiring African-Americans: From Slavery to Freedom,” on Saturday, February 22, from 10:00 to 11:00 am, in Room 2A of the library.

Carol Beauchamp, from the library’s Genealogy & Local History Department, will share fascinating stories of some courageous African-American slaves who defied the odds and escaped to freedom. Their ingenious plans were fraught with risk and danger.

Learn how Robert Smalls stole a Confederate steamer right out of the Charleston harbor, and how Henry “Box” Brown mailed himself to abolitionists in the north. The story of Harriet Jacobs will also be discussed, along with the harrowing escape of Ellen and William Craft.

The program is free and open to the public. For more information, call George Memorial Library (281-342-4455) or the library system’s Communications Office (281-633-4734).
