Description

Fort Bend County Libraries’ Mamie George Branch Library (Stafford) will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an Open House! The public is invited to enjoy light refreshments, crafts, and our annual Friends of the Library Book Sale.

Mamie George Branch Library opened in November 1974, and was named for Mamie George, a well-known Fort Bend County philanthropist. Her family was very instrumental in the early development of the Fort Bend County library system. Funds for the building were donated by The George Foundation, and the land for the library site was donated by the Fort Bend Independent School District. The 4,900-square-foot building was designed by Wylie W. Vale and Associates, Wylie W. Vale, Design Architect. The branch was renovated in 1991, and in 1996, the small-business-center materials that were formerly housed at the Missouri City Branch were moved to the Mamie George Branch. Minor renovations in the spring of 2015 included the addition of a makerspace -- an area set aside in the library where patrons can create, edit, and publish special projects, such as digital and electronic art, videography, and much more. The makerspace project began in 2014, when the library received the Amigos Fellowship and Opportunity Award for innovation and development of new library services. The award included a grant to be used for equipment for the makerspace, which was the first of its kind for the FBCL system.

The open house is free and open to the public. Funds for materials generously provided by the Friends of the Mamie George Branch Library.
