Spring is right around the corner, and gardeners are making plans for the new planting season. Two of our branches will have programs on gardening this month. Join us for inspiration and new ideas, and hear about plant varieties that work well in our area. Reservations are not required for these programs.
FEB 11
- “Growing Vegetables: When, Where, What, & How”- 6:00 to 7:45 pm, Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, Meeting Room.
Seasoned gardeners, as well as beginning gardeners who might be considering starting a vegetable garden for the first time, are invited to attend a special program. Fort Bend County Master Gardener and Vegetable Specialist Ralph Fuller will provide an overview of spring vegetable gardening. Learn how to plan the lay-out and location of your garden for optimal sun, shade, and drainage. Get tips on container-gardening, row-gardening, and on preparing your garden with soil amendments and compost. Fuller will also talk about varieties of plants that grow well in the area, and their growing seasons. Learn about Integrated Pest Management practices and how to set up a maintenance schedule for watering, fertilizing, weeding, and pest- and disease-control measures.

- “Plant for Pollinators” – 10:00 am – Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, Meeting Room.
Susie Marten, a steward for the Katy Prairie Conservancy, will talk about the importance of pollinators – including insects, birds, and mammals – to the local ecosystem. Learn about native plants that can be incorporated into the landscape to attract and support pollinators. Marten will also talk about the prairie grasslands in the area. Hear about the efforts of the Katy Prairie Conservancy to protect this endangered landscape.
- “Butterfly Gardening” – 2:00 pm – University Branch Library, Meeting Room.
Fort Bend County Master Gardeners will talk about which plants attract different types of butterflies to gardens. Discover which plants are hosts for caterpillars, and which are sources of nectar for adult butterflies.
