Festive Activities for the Winter Season

Catch the holiday spirit at Fort Bend County Libraries! Throughout the month, we’ll have a variety of programs, from designing ugly holiday sweaters and wrapping those hard-to-wrap gifts to creating memories and enjoying the angelic voices of an elementary school choir. Stop by to join us!

Crochet for the Holidays

Under the direction of choir director Laura Brown, the Austin Elementary School Choir will sing a variety of holiday songs.

Hand Lettering for the Holidays
Mission Bend Branch Library – 2:00 pm, Conference Room
In this workshop, learn how to create beautiful hand-written messages for friends and family – just in time for the holidays! Discover a new style of hand lettering with a lesson in faux calligraphy that is designed for beginners. Registration required; click here to register.

Adult Craft: “Book-Art Snowman
Cinco Ranch Branch Library – 7:00-8:00 pm, Conference Classroom. 
Learn how to transform an old book into a unique piece of art! Discover ways to form simple shapes and images, such as a tree or a snowman, by folding pages of a book. No cutting, gluing, or special equipment is needed for this simple craft project. The project is a fun way to re-use old books and give them a new purpose. Ugly-Sweater-Making Workshop
Mamie George Branch Library (Stafford) – 10:30 am, Makerspace area.
Sweater weather is here, and the holidays are near! Bring on the holiday cheer with a tacky sweater of your own creation! Bring a sweater, shirt, or sweatshirt of your choice, and the library will provide the decorations for a fun-filled morning of crafting! Sienna Art Club: “Flannel Holiday Trees”
Sienna Branch Library, 3:00-5:00 pm
This monthly program is for people who enjoy all kinds of crafts. The featured demonstration in December will be on making holiday trees out of flannel, Styrofoam cones, and glue. Materials for the demonstration are provided courtesy of the Friends of the Sienna Branch Library. People of all ages and experience levels – from beginners to advanced – who enjoy any types of crafts are invited to attend. Bring a craft project and share experiences with others who are thinking about taking up a new hobby. Those attending this program should bring their own supplies for their craft. Upcycling with Left-Over Supplies”

Get tips and ideas for putting last year’s greeting cards and left-over scraps from craft projects to good use! Learn how to create gift boxes and coasters, and discover creative ways to wrap small, difficult-shaped gifts. Adult Craft: Clay-Pot Candy Dishes” 
Mission Bend Branch Library – 3:00 pm, Meeting Room. 
Create a candy dish from clay pots to keep or to give as a gift for the holidays. Participants will design and paint their own festive dishes to take home. Supplies are limited. Registration required; click here to register.

Family Program: “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” Marionette Performance
Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library – 11:00 am, Meeting Room. 
For the marionette performance, master puppeteer Jean Kuecher will entertain children of all ages with a holiday story, complete with Santa, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, and the lovely Snow Queen. The story begins in Santa’s workshop at the North Pole and follows Santa and Rudolph’s journey through a snowy forest, where the lovely Snow Queen provides a wonderful way to warm Rudolph’s nose and melt the snow away. The sleigh and its crew finally arrive at a family home, where Santa leaves gifts under the tree. This event is made possible by the Friends of the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library.

Gift-Wrapping Workshop
Mission Bend Branch Library – 4:00 pm, Meeting Room. 
In this workshop, master some simple gift-wrapping techniques. Participants are invited to bring an item that they need help wrapping and learn some tricks that will have them wrapping with ease in no time.

 

WED, DEC 21

Culinary Book Club: Holiday Cookie-Recipe Exchange 
University Branch Library, 1:30 pm, Meeting Room 1. 
This month, the club will have a holiday cookie-recipe exchange. Because of health precautions, participants will NOT be bringing food this month, but are encouraged to bring a photo of their dish or a short video showing how to prepare it. The Culinary Book Club meets on the third Wednesday of every month, and different cooking genres are explored each month. Cooking enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels – from beginners to advanced -- are invited to join. Share tips, get ideas, and enjoy the camaraderie of other individuals who have an interest in cooking and good cuisine! 

Family Program: “Winter Wonderland” 
Sugar Land Branch Library – 2:00-3:00 pm. 
Families with children of all ages are invited to a winter-themed event featuring crafts, games, face-painting, and more!

"Kwanzaa: A Celebration of Family, Community, & Culture"
Missouri City Branch Library, 7:00-8:00 pm, Meeting Room 
Mshinda Nyofu will discuss the origins, roots, symbols, and practice of the African-American holiday, Kwanzaa. This program is made possible through the generous support of the Friends of the Missouri City Branch Library.
