Starting a New Business? Get Tips at the Library!

Are you thinking about starting a new business? Would you like ideas for helping your business grow?  Fort Bend County Libraries will have two programs in January for small-business entrepreneurs.

The programs are free and open to the public. For more information, call the branch library or the library system’s Communications Office at 281-633-4734.

  • Simple Steps to Start a Business

Anyone who is considering owning their own business is encouraged to attend a hands-on workshop, “Simple Steps to Start a Business,” at the First Colony Branch Library on Saturday, January 12, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, in the Meeting Room of the library.

Many start-up businesses are doomed to failure because of lack of planning. This workshop will cover the various steps one needs to consider when starting a business. Get a better understanding of the different options for starting a new business or buying an existing one. Learn how to develop a financial plan and get funding.

The workshop is presented by SCORE mentor Matt Fitzgerald, who began his career as a CPA with Ernst & Young before moving into executive-finance roles with Baker Hughes, BJ Services Co., Veritas DGC, and Grant Prideco Inc. He has started several different business ventures, including a restaurant, real-estate rentals, and a cell-phone retail store.

This program is presented in partnership with SCORE, the non-profit mentoring arm of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Those attending this program will learn about resources that are available through SCORE and how to draw on the experience of other SCORE members.

Reservations are not required.

  • Social Media for Business

George Memorial Library in Richmond will present a special program, “Social Media for Business,” on Tuesday, January 15, beginning at 2:00 pm, in the Computer Lab of the library.

Library staff will provide an overview of different online, social-media platforms that can be used to grow a business. Learn how to use sites such as Facebook and Instagram to connect with existing customers, reach new customers, and increase brand loyalty.

Seating is limited, and reservations are required. Participants may register by calling the library at 281-341-2604, or by visiting the library.
