Program Description

Description

Reconstruction was a very difficult time after the Civil War. The Freedmen’s Bureau was created to help the ex-slaves ease into the transition from slavery to freedom. To do this, field offices were set up throughout the south including Richmond, Texas, to assist the freedmen. In this lecture, we will look at the records from the Richmond office in detail. They are fascinating and give much insight into the struggles of the freedmen and their previous owners during this time. These records also offer valuable genealogical information. There is a lot of interesting information to learn from these records.
