Libraries are more than just books! Did you know we have online resources that will help you fix small engines? Write a business plan? Learn a language?
Each month, we’ll highlight resources that you might not know about! If you have questions about a particular resource, let us know!
World Book
World Book Online is not your grandmother’s encyclopedia set that many people were familiar with over the years! While it continues the editorial excellence and invaluable resources that the traditional version has been committed to for more than 100 years, World Book Online takes the immersive learning experience to a whole new level!
The popular print World Book Encyclopedias have been transformed into a dynamic online learning experience. With a Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) card, access to World Book Online is FREE anytime, anywhere, with any computer or device with an Internet connection, whether at the library, at home, or school.
This invaluable resource engages and excites information seekers of all ages, from pre-readers to those simply interested in learning something new or keeping their facts straight. Like its predecessor, World Book Online is the perfect trusted source to find the answer to a random question, explore a curious topic, or discover something new and exciting.
World Book Online’s immersive learning experience brings thousands of informational articles, derived from their world-renowned encyclopedia, and combines them with innovative technology and highly visual content -- including stunning illustrations, interactive maps, videos, and other multimedia -- in a resource that will captivate even the most reluctant learners.
Continual updates with timely, up-to-date articles, along with primary-source materials, make World Book Online a dynamic informational hub with unbiased, authoritative information.
This user-friendly resource includes 6 different tiered modules that are customized for different age levels, so the word choice, amount of content, and navigation is age appropriate. The modules include Early Learning (grades PreK+), Kids (grades K+), Student (grades 5+), Advanced (grades 9+), Timelines (grades 5+), and World Book's Enciclopedia Estudiantil Hallazgos (grades K+), a beginner’s Spanish-language reference tool. These short video tutorials introduce the World Book Advanced resource: Part 1 and Part 2.
By breaking down complex topics and using easily understood text, the platform helps to build fluency and increase comprehension. As the modules progress, short, basic sentences transform into complex paragraphs, building literacy and creating subject experts.
For early learners and kids, image-based navigation, games, videos, and activities make learning interactive and fun.
For older students and advanced learners, World Book Online provides intuitive browsing, advanced search options, current news and primary-source collections, and citation assistance.
Educator tools -- such as ready-made lesson plans, curriculum correlations, webquests and activities, and graphic organizers – are available in many of the modules.
Accessibility aids include a text-to-voice feature that reads the text on the screen, variable font sizes, and a dyslexic alternative font. Several of the modules also have a translation tool that can convert the information on the screen into one of more than 100 languages, from Afrikaans to Zulu.
Library cardholders can access World Book Online remotely through the Fort Bend County Libraries website. Simply click on the “Research” tab, then “Digital Resources & Databases.” Select the Alphabetical option, and choose “W.”

An Introduction to Writers' Corner
A Writing & Publishing Tool
PART 1: PRESSBOOKS
PART 2: INDIE AUTHOR PROJECT
PART 3: BIBLIOBOARDS
PRESSBOOKS PUBLIC: The first instrument in the suite of resources – PressBooks Public – is a digital self-publishing tool designed to help aspiring writers easily create their own professional-quality print-ready and ebook files that can be distributed commercially or shared in FBCL’s Writers’ Corner. Users have unlimited access to this resource, which requires no previous design or tech experience.
Writers can choose from a variety of premade design templates to instantly give their book a professional layout. The author maintains complete ownership of any and all book files created using PressBooks Public, and they can publish or distribute those files however they choose.
Creating a username and password is required for using the PressBooks Public and BiblioBoard Library features. Having an account enables writers to create and store their works in the PressBooks Public tool, and it allows readers to access the BiblioBoard Library ebook they are reading from locations outside the county, use “bookmarks,” and sync their preferences. The same username and password will accommodate both the PressBooks Public and BiblioBoard Library features.
When creating an account, users will select Fort Bend County Libraries and then enter their library-card barcode number. FBCL will then be saved as their preferred library for future access.
INDIE AUTHOR PROJECT: The second tool is the Indie Author Project. This resource gives local writers the opportunity to submit ebooks for inclusion in the BiblioBoard Library collection in FBCL’s Writers’ Corner. As part of a partnership with "Library Journal," this resource also offers the potential for inclusion in the royalty-paying Indie Author Project Select collections available at libraries all across the U.S. and Canada.
Books that are not selected for "Library Journal’s" Indie Author Project Select collection may still be considered for the Indie Texas collection, which is available to participating libraries around the state. Both avenues help authors to promote their work and gain further exposure, whether it is locally or nationally.
BIBLIOBOARD LIBRARY: The third feature in this suite -- the BiblioBoard Library – will attract the interest of readers who are looking for digital works from self-published authors, top indie ebooks, local collections, and more. Items in this collection are always available, so there is never a waiting list or limit for the number of check-outs.
Writers who create works in PressBooks Public and participate in the Indie Author Project will find their ebooks added to the BiblioBoard Library, where they can be enjoyed by the general public.
Readers can access the BiblioBoard Library collection through FBCL’s website or by downloading the BiblioBoard Library app for Apple, Android, or Kindle devices.
